2015 was no landmark year for music, nor was it for me in listening to music. I still managed around 50 albums, so one a week, which for a non-professional music journalist I’d say is still okay going; with other, non-music related, commitments I found it hard to listen to so many album, or perhaps initially uninspired.
Leaving a music environment for the “real-world” has a huge effect on you, and it’s something I’ve been trying to resolve recently. After realising I hadn’t listened to new music and was only waking up, sticking on something I knew, working, coming home, sleep repeat, I began to force myself back in and remembered it was the most liberated thing about my life, and the most important method of expressing. I don’t need to go into the cliches of “ooh i’m angry stick on some death metal” but you catch my drift. After endless repetitive party playlists and club nights it was invigorating to re-embrace music, that epiphany didn’t happen until November after seeing three gigs in three weeks. I think I owe this year to Periphery to helping me get back into the swing of things.
Anyway, there are still many albums that I missed, annoyingly so, but this list of Top 15 is a solid list of what I enjoyed and am still listening to. I regret not exploring other genres this year, I found myself enjoying hip-hop more than I ever have however (due to the release of Straight Outta Compton (I worked in a cinema during the summer.))
I hope you enjoy this list, and whilst it won’t be the most genre exploring, nor obscure list, I hope some of you that read this, especially those of you who don’t explore music as much as you could, will find something that you enjoy, find something that inspires you, and find something that’ll stick with you for a long time.
Thank you for your continued support,
