11. Band of Skulls – Himalayan
This album almost didn’t make it into the list only because I’m an idiot and forgot it came out this year. I’ve listened to this album a lot since seeing the band for the first time, hearing them as well, at Reading Festival. It’s so dynamic, taking the up beat and jolty blues aspects but managing to add in more smoother, jazzier and ‘ballady’ elements. It flows well and though there’s no overruling sense of ‘adrenaline’ the way it weaves throughout he albums various emotional states is well crafted. They also have a girl in their band and don’t use that as a key focus of the band, as it should be. She is a band member, not a front-woman, remove her, the songs aren’t worse, they wouldn’t exist at all. Very talented trio; big, clever and nostalgic things to come.
