My Top 15 Albums of 2013, #8 – Von Hertzen Brothers – Nine Lives

8. Von Hertzen Brothers – Nine Lives

Nine-Lives

Here’s another album I wish I had reviewed when the album came out. I first heard of this band this year when Planet Rock Radio would play the single “Flowers and Rust”. It felt nostalgic but I had no idea where I heard of it before, little did I even know it had been released several weeks prior to me listening to it. It’s a beautiful song with a simple construction and the first half of ‘Nine Lives’ echoes this by resembling more popular grunge rock associated with acts like Foo Fighters but mixing in some more subtle technicalities like Soundgarden. The latter half of the album however diversifies itself into a surfeit of musical indulgence and progressive illustriousness. Definitely one of the unsung heroes of 2013 and an intelligent and one of the most underrated bands I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.
