The Ocean – Pelagial (2013) – Short Album Review – Progressive Metal/Sludge Metal

Short Review

Conceptually about the multiple layers of the ocean, this album builds up the pressure and weight on you from the get go. ‘Epipelagic’ leading into ‘Mesopelagic’ is a clear understanding that this album will transition into darker territory despite the sprinkling beginnings. Leaving you feeling pulverised by the ‘Benthic’ layer. The ocean is a dark place and this band convey that beautifully. Originally instrumental, the vocals add an extra added depth to this masterpiece. A dark and brutal exploration into territory few dare. A fantastic combination of sludge and progressive music, and most importantly a beautiful piece of German art.

Verdict 5/5 Stars
